  2. For one week only, purchase any size print from the book of the featured musician or band, and choose your two giveaways.
  3. The Hitch…? (Isn’t there always a hitch?) You will have only one week to purchase a print of the featured musician AND get the extra giveaways! Once that week is over, a new featured musician or band will revealed and the giveaway offer then applies only to the new musician/band. Fair warning: these giveaways are available only for the next ten weeks!

It’s Classified!

“I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.”  A very limited edition of fifty (50) gorgeous 13×19 inch fine art poster prints will be unveiled at the Rock Art Show in Chicago this weekend.  The print is exclusive to the Rock Art Show and is reasonably priced at $75.  The subject must remain a secret or there will be a rush on the prints.  I can tell you this, however.  11×14 inch pigments prints of this photo of Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company will also be available, a poignant shot taken late in 1967, in a small park in Marin County, around the time we started Rolling Stone and before Janis and the band had become super stars.  Hope to see y’all there…

Rock the Windy City!

Baron_Wolman_Janis_Joplin

Hello Chicago!

I’m headed to the Windy City next weekend to appear at my friend, Scott Segelbaum’s, “Rock Art Show.”  The collection of art of and by famous rock and rollers is sponsored by WLS-FM, “The Station That Grew Up With You.” You must come see the hundreds of pieces on display, an amazing assemblage of unique, colorful, collectable and affordable rock and roll art.

I’ll be on hand most of the time; be sure to stop by and say hello.  We will have copies for sale of my new book, “The Rolling Stone Years,” which I will gladly autograph for you, as well as two spectacular new prints on display that I’ve never exhibited, this one of a smiling and happy Janis Joplin, the other of Janis with Big Brother & The Holding Company playing outdoors in a small park in Marin County, both from 1967, the year we started Rolling Stone.

See you there!

Photoville opened this past, steamy weekend in Brooklyn, NY. The festival features some 30 shipping containers showing mini-exhibitions curated by some great people and organizations, with photographs hung using various creative methods. The other rather wonderful element is the quality of talks and presentations being hosted. I will be one of the talkers this coming weekend, on June 30th, where I am thrilled to be hosted by Rock Paper Photo with my long-term colleague and dear friend, consultant and curator Julie Grahame, and shorter-term pal, the young and lovely music photographer Anna Webber. Join us at 1.30 pm for “Beyond the Picture: The Art of Selling Music Photography” What does it take for music and entertainment photographers to successfully market and sell their work?

Photoville and all the talks are FREE so come on over to Brooklyn Bridge Park. We’ll see you on Saturday!

Govinda Gallery & Columbus Museum

Director of Development Donna Atkins, Curator of Education Abbie Edens, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Kristen Miller Zohn, and Guest Curator Chris Murray with Baron’s photograph of Janis Joplin.

‘Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock & Roll Photography’ just opened in Columbus, Georgia. Our friends at Govinda Gallery “…have been working for several years developing this touring exhibition with the Columbus Museum. This exhibition represents much of our work championing significant photographs documenting rock & roll, hip hop, and blues music.”

Baron has photographs of Janis Joplin and Mick Jagger in the show and says “it is a really terrific and unpretentious exhibit which celebrates the power and quality of the images, an exhibit of which I’m very proud to be a part.” See Govinda for details.

Big Mama Thornton

Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, San Francisco, 1968

“Willie Mae ‘Big Mama’ Thornton sang at the Newport Folk Festival, one of our stops on our 1969 Festival tour. Janis (Joplin) always gave credit to Big Mama, explained how she had been hugely inspired by her, that she listened a lot to Big Mama’s music. Big Mama’s song ‘Ball And Chain’ became a Janis classic.”

Incidentally, Big Mama was also the first to make a hit of “Hound Dog.”

Janis Joplin – Concert For One

Janis Joplin, Belvedere Street Studio, San Francisco, 1968

“I needed to get some color shots of Janis, but there were no concerts scheduled so she came to the studio… I don’t know what goes on in the head of performers; maybe they either perform or they don’t perform… As I recall Janis could not “not” perform, so for an hour she gave me the gift of a Janis Joplin live performance. I call it “The Concert For One.” I was taking pictures and she was singing just for me alone.”

Big Brother And The Holding Company

Big Brother & The Holding Company, Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, 1968

Baron photographed Janis Joplin’s band Big Brother And The Holding Company as well as photographing her solo on a number of occasions – you can see why he loved hanging out with them. These group shots were taken at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco in 1968. Janis had just come from the dentist – you can see her holding her face but not quite covering that big smile.

Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin at home, San Francisco, 1967

This is one of my favourite quotes from the book. I can picture Baron having these conversations:

“People are always coming up to me, “Can I talk to you privately; I bet you have some great stories about what went on in those days?” I say, “Yeah I do,” and they say, “Well, what went on?” and I answer, “What do you think went on?” And they come back, “Yeah, yeah,” and I say, “Yeah!” I mean what do I tell them, that people were smoking pot? Of course they were smoking pot. That they were backstage making out? Of course they were. Did I see anybody destroy hotel rooms? No, and so what if they did, so what if I had seen it, what is there to see that I could tell them that they don’t already know? One question that is continually repeated is, “Hey, can I talk to you privately, tell me – it won’t go any further, just for me – did you sleep with Janis Joplin, just tell me, did you sleep with Janis Joplin?” And I always answer, “Well what do you think?” I either say it like this – “What do you think?” or “What do you think?” And they say, “Oh, man, thank you, thanks, I appreciate that, it means a lot to me.” I let them use their imagination; I never say anything more, never go beyond that response! Never did and never will.”
